I have actually had conversations with Robert Black, who is already serving a life sentence for other child murders.He stayed, overnight, in a hotel, in my town in the West of Scotland, every week. I met him in my local pub, on Thursday nights, when they had a band on. He had been directed to it by the hotel staff, as the place to go.

He told me that he was from Scotland, originally, but lived in England now. He was self employed delivering printed posters and other stationery items all over Scotland and Northern Ireland. He always worn a barbour styled waxed jacket, brown corduroy jeans with a gamekeeper's hat, to cover his baldness and black steel toe capped boots. He was asking about the availability of women. He had been in the pub the previous week and did not 'pull' anyone. He wore a wedding ring and I assumed that he was the typical lorry driver, off the lead, looking for a quickie. He had rather piecing eyes, blue I think, which lit up, somewhat, when talking of women. I remember thinking that he might have brought a change of cloths to go out on the town but then thought that by doing so it would make the wife, suspicious. I suggested to him that he go to a bigger town, some five miles away, where there were Discos. One Disco, in particular, had a lorry park around it and drivers were known to sleep in their cabs there. Many local 'ladies of the night' were known to 'work' there. After that I never saw him again and assumed that he had taken my advice.

When it all came out about him, I was worried a bit and went over and over it all in my mind. I had never had qualms about him, at the time. There were no signs of menace and we had had a guy conversation over a couple of drinks. No kids, in my area were killed, at that time. Peter Tobin was born in my town too. For a town of about 20,000 people, it is some place eh?? On the bright side, Gordon Ramsay (cook), Phylis Logan (actress) Rene Houston (deceased Actress), Hunter Davis (Author), George Reid (deceased former P.M. of Australia) and Jim Leighton (ex-Scotland goalkeeper) were all born in Johnstone Renfrewshire.
