This saga has been ongoing for over 10 years. Travellers bought land and built on it, without planning permission, in the hopes that they would be granted retrospective permission presenting their homes as being built. However, the local council were having none of it. Some travellers had bought adjacent land, applied for and got planning permission, which made them quite legally sited. The Council did not see why one group could go through the proper procedure and others tried to ride roughshod over the regulations.
It will now cost some £20 million to get them out of there and things are brewing up for quite a battle. Six leading lights in the community have pitches bought and paid for in another site. They have built homes and have them rented out there, quite legally. They could move but are trying to stay there and continue to gain income.
