It is all very well to lay down a blanket rule but people's circumstances may make it difficult to buy a house.
a person may be working but be deemed not credit worthy over previous dealings. A person may earn a lot and pay a out most of it in a separation or divorce settlement.
At £100K a year a person would be allowed a mortgage of about £300 K. You would not get much for that in inner London.
