In this article, it says that nobody has travelled faster than Mach 3.1. No paying passenger on a commercial airliner certainly but rubbish on facts.
Even if you discount the paying passengers, who have gone into space, courtesy of the Russians, there are a few military planes which fly these speeds and faster. Talking of the Russians, their Mig 25 Foxbat was clocked at Mach 3.2 in 1976 !!!! A while ago. they have now built the Mig 31. and who knows what they have in the hanger!
The Americans have just retired the SR 71 Blackbird which whizzed along at Mach 3.3 to take the World record in 1976, too. The Aurora is reputed to fly at cruising speeds of Mach 5. Much is posted on the Internet about the Black Mantra TSR 3 which is a flying wing shaped craft. There are some details of a diamond shaped craft which is, reputedly,very fast too.
With only 20 seats this thing just ain't gonna make any money, unless the seat prices are astronomical, which defeats the purpose, completely. Concorde didn't make money charging thousands of pounds for a seat and it was normally full up.
These days, mega deals are done over secure webcam links and conference calls and so there is little need to rush around. It is all very well having a flight time of two hours, but it takes more than that to emplane and deplane at either terminus.This could turn into another White Elephant like the the RAF's TSR 2.
