This all happened nearly 60 years ago and is hardly news!!! The only interesting part is the extraction method.
A bamboo chair rig with a heavily supported and lashed up circle on the top. A person sits there and hopes that it holds together as a plane trailing a hook passes low and slow overhead to hook the rig !!
The SAS use the Islander aircraft as it can fly at low speeds. The slower the pick up, the less stress on the rig and the person in it!! This method is used when the SAS do long distance sky dives into one country from another countries' air space. The plane flies close to the border, the guys jump and can "fly" into the banned country. It is said that 20 to 30 miles can be achieved before opening the parachute. This happens on recon missions in mainly desert conditions. They have canisters, attached, containing their extraction rig and their other equipment. The exit canister is buried in the desert and compass readings taken. They must go and do whatever they have to do, then return, build the rig and await extraction.
