While I completely understand their point of view and defend their right to say as they feel, I would be totally against a return to Capital punishment in the Uk. There have been way too many mistakes made over the years for various reasons. John Bentley hung in England for the killing of a detective on a roof top in London. He was 15 when he and an older man went up there for whatever reason. A gun was pulled and the cop killed. The other guy rolled over and blamed Bentley, probably thinking that, as a minor, they would not hang him. It has come out, many years later that it was, in fact, more likely that the adult pulled the trigger. As the adult rolled over and gave evidence against Bentley he was not hung.
I am writing from memory here, so bear with me. However, I am sure that was the rough idea of the case. In England, anybody present at a killing, is blamed for it, even although they did not actually carry out the Act. The adult, I assume, presumed that they would take Bentley's age into consideration and so went for a defence for himself. In Scotland, only the person who carries out the action can be charged with murder.
Surely, it is better to put a person in prison, allow them to try to prove their innocence, than to kill them due to an error or a fit up by the Police. On that note a life sentence should be for the rest of the natural life and not about 7 years,as it can be in some cases.
