Fitting them with armour, anti-missle systems and early warning gear to allow them to operate in any war zone would cost hundreds of millions more. The delivery programme is running five and a half years late!
Therefore the RAF must keep using old VC10's to transport troops and Tristars for mid air refueling. This is costing some £500 million prior to the new aircraft being delivered in 2016. Flight management systems and cockpit displays have been replaced, on Tristars, at a cost of £23.5 million to keep them flying. Not only the foregoing costs they have paid £175 million, in three years, for private charters to fly personnel and equipment here there and everywhere.
Really this is disgraceful and in the words of 4 Non Blonds "What's going on?"
