1657 Parliament offered Oliver Cromwell the title of King in the "Humble Petition and Advice." He rejected it. Cromwell founded the New Model Army and defeated Charles 1 in the English civil war.
1939 Britain and France issue guarantees that they will declare war if Poland is invaded by Nazi Germany. Germany did and they declared war.
1990 New local taxes spark the "poll-tax" riots in London which was the worst civil unrest for a hundred years.
