Any person, anywhere, has a legitimate right to defend themselves against an attack, so long as excessive force is not used to repulse and/or subdue the attacker, in my opinion.
In this incident, the drunk clown aimed a kick and missed. He then fell onto the ground. The goal keeper, in my view, was no longer in danger from the yob, as he lay on the ground and so had no right to ,in fact, attack the prone idiot, using heavy football boots. So two wrongs don't make a right. To me the referee was absolutely correct. The goalkeeper should have stepped back and allowed the Police to arrest the muppet.
Stewards and Police should never have let it happen, in the first instance. However, in their defence, a football ground is a big area to secure.
