I have come to the conclusion that we are here, in our own past, from somewhere in our future. Each civilisation, in the universe, has evolved into one homogeneous place, of all races and types, living harmoniously. We come here, in a sort of 'living' history, to see what conditions were like for people in their daily lives, in a chosen time. But is it a prize or a punishment or both? You could have a nice 'life' experience as a prize or a bad one as a punishment.
The reason being that, far in our future, when everything is as near perfect as it can be, no diseases, no work as machines do it all and build new machines as needed, longevity, processed food with all the nutrients we need and so on. Just a living collective of all who reached there.
However, we still nave a need, even in the future, for thrills, tests and contests and so all of history is available to spend some time in and live through a life, in the past. When you time's up, you then return to the future and exchange notes or win enough points for another go, or whatever. Bad behaviour gets a bad time, in some episode of history.
