Dumpster diving for dinner and a better world - The Local

If I was extremely poor and/or living on the streets I would choose to be living very near a supermarket to pick up the stuff that they throw out as passed sell by date. Why don't the supermarkets have a backdoor hatch or something whereby they can give the food away to needy people as opposed to just dumping it in a bin and letting the needy fight for it all in many cases.
