A hundred years or so ago it used to be "trouble in the Balkans." Now it is "trouble in the Stans." When the Ottoman Empire broke up the newly independent countries in the Balkans had "growing pains" and leadership hassles.
Now with the Soviet Empire broken up there is the same trouble in the Stans. However the Stans appear to be going Muslim which the West, namely America don't like.
