The Red Ensign is under threat if you read the sub editors line. But when you read the story the truth is that it is not!!! The stushie is about foreign crews being paid wages equivalent to what they would get at home for doing the same job wherever they are in the World.
If a worker on a boat is to be paid the rate for the job as would be paid in Britain then they would actually get nothing at all ! Red Ensign sailors are paid via tax havens in Isle of Man and are treated as working offshore.
If they leave a ship, at the end of a trip, they come home via Dublin and then hop on a Ryanhair Tax Dodger flight and come in via the domestic channel. Their passport is not stamped as having entered the country and they can overstay their days and still pay no tax as they are not 'stamped' in to the UK. When they get a ship they just fly out via Dublin too. Technically they have never set foot in the UK and so they pay no tax.
