An awful lot of policemen in the UK are Masons and therefore predominantly Protestant. There has always been animosity between members of the Catholic Church and members of Protestant ones going back many hundreds of years.
It is said that unless you are a Mason you will not get past the rank of Sergeant and very rarely reach that of Inspector. Any rank higher is Masonic only unofficially. There is no bar on a catholic joining the Masons from their side. It is the Catholic Church that has banned Catholics from joining because Masons take secret oaths. In practice, it is a rare to find a Catholic Mason in the general community. It is said that the current Pope is a Mason and he certainly gives the Masonic grip when meeting non Catholics.
All males in the Royal family are Masons and the Duke of Kent is the head UK Mason.A son may join at 18 as opposed to 21 if his father is 'a member in good standing.' Or in other words, paid his dues and goes to meetings.
