But will Britain suffer too? VAT up to 20% may not seem a huge rise. Many countries in Europe have a higher rate. However if food and children's clothing now attract VAT it will really hit low income families very hard indeed. Just think how much it would mean in your household if you suddenly need to find another 20p for every pound that you spend on food? Never mind the new school uniforms for Wintertime.
Personally it will cost me about £20 per month. However a family of four, say, will have to find an extra £50 / £70 per month!!! with kids clothing, in addition, that makes a big increase.
Of course it is all, in theory at present. But I do hope that when, not if, VAT goes up, probably in the forthcoming Budget in 45 or so days time, that it doesn't affect food and clothing. if so then I foresee mass rioting on the streets of Britain the like of which have not been seen before.
