Nigeria is a country split into North and South with a different tribe ruling each half. The oil,money and Government are in the South.
Until Goodluck Jonathan won power,each tribe won elections alternately and basically nothing was ever done for the people. Jonathan picked,as his deputy,a guy from the other tribe. he also gave some senior jobs to people from the other tribe. He did this to try and get some sort of unity in Nigeria. It actually worked for two years and then things went back to 'normal.'
I have no figures about religion of the tribes. However, I would guess that the power hub people would be Christian.
This new violence is really just a return to their abnormal jealousy and oneupmanship under a new banner.
