When African countries moved to independence, away from their colonial masters, Britain, Belgium, Portugal and France, it left a vacuum, which the Chinese saw and quietly moved into, to fill. During many power-hungry revolutions, they were there, in the background forging links with both winners and losers.

Suddenly it was realized that Africa was the last unexploited area. Yes, it had been nibbled at but it was totally fragmented as far as cohesion was concerned. Each small country had different political and social views. The European colonists had tried to force Christianity onto Africa, which had largely failed. The Chinese sought minerals and had no religion and so the Continent was ripe for Islam.
