You try raising a family on £1,000 a month Edwina: Mother challenges ex-MP after clash on national radio over family finances | Mail Online

£1,000 per month, for two adults, a baby and a toddler is tight but by no means impossible. They will get child benefit too. £230 per week. £450 per month or £105 pw goes on the home mortgage and they will be liable for the full amount of poll tax. I suppose that the home should be warm for the kids and hot water is a must. Say £40 pw Food bill of about £60 pw Still leaves £25 for trips, cloths and nursery fees.
I would guess that at £6 for twenty cigarettes times 7 or £45 or £90 pw for two people is the big problem here. The fact that the guy lost his job sure don't help either. No doubt he has a car to run with insurance and petrol. He is now earning £700 per month and so may be entitled to tax credits and a small reduction in poll tax as she should be too, due to low income.
They need an interest only mortgage if they don't have one, but they are hard to come by these days
