Is William Hague delusional or has he travelled back in time to an age when England was a sea power? Scotland was a separate nation then and sided with the French against England. He is now threatening Iran! They must be pissing themselves laughing!
We have no aircraft carriers left! We do have a few commando and helicopter carrying mini ones. We do have a few type 42 and 45 destroyers which the Iranians could use for missile target practice. We have just sent one, yes one! We do have 4 nuclear subs which are very, very, good. We do have the SAS which is the best in the World.
We have a load of fighter/bombers which would need to refuel, probably, twice each way. We have tremendous heavy lifters to move troops, tanks and helicopters. But move them to where? Afghanistan would make them a simple target.We do not have any bases nearer,other than Cyprus. This, again, would be an easy target.
The War game plan these days is to use sea power. Sit off shore and fire in cruise missiles and sub mounted ones to flatten the targets in the country. Then send in the fighter bombers to clean up, followed by land forces, supported by helicopters. Then the heavy lifters fly in the beer and they all get a sun tan.
Britain can't do that. The days of 'send a gunboat' are long gone.
