American politics

America, like Britain, is a two party system with Democrats and Republicans. Both are right wing parties with the Democrats being nearer to the centre. There are other parties but they are also rans at election time.

Recently there has emerged the Tea party, followed by the Coffee party. It looks like America is heading for a slight change. Rand Paul has just defeated Arlen Specter, who recently moved from Republicans to Democrats in desperation to hold the seat some say. So in Kentucky, the Tea party has won the primary giving them their first seat in the Senate and boosting their nationwide standing. It just might be a one off protest vote or will there be a ground swell riding up in future elections.
