If you are non aligned then you are not a member of any alliance or group. So what did the independent countries do? They  formed their own group. Needless to say, many had different views from others and no consensus could be reached unless it was on the most general terms. The group became a talking shop.

Now, with the formation of BRICS, the non aligned countries are coming together under this new banner.
