I am of the opinion that this was a 'death by cop'incident These incidents are happening a lot in USA. People crave their 15 minutes of fame and go out and get into situations where a cop(s) just has to shoot them. Some shoot up innocent people or try to rob banks going on car chases to nowhere other than the final shoot out.
