America went on to the digital phone system a long time before the Uk. Digital signals are far easier to store that the old analogue and so I am not surprised that they are stored away, probably, by the various phone companies as opposed to the Government. Still, they have plenty of room at this new facility, in Utah, which has just been built for the purpose of storing and analysing data
Personally, I think that the new game will be to integrate the Facebook derived data, with everything already stored, at various places. Thus they will have everything under one roof  and plenty room for continual expansion.
