Bedroom tax madness as mum faces eviction from home housing chiefs spent £60k making fit for her disabled son -
There is a shortage of flats for couples, everywhere. Many two and three bedroom flats are occupied by one person and the extra bedroom(s) are not used. So some smartarse decided that people could be forced to give up their home, voluntarily or be financially penalised for living in a home bigger than they needed. This would free up family homes. for couples. But where do the single people go? The streets??!!!
The Housing benefit is to be reduced by a set amount for each extra bedroom which is not in use. The person living in the flat must make up the shortfall from other income, or fall into arrears. Eventually, as the arrears mount up,the person will be taken to Court for the money outstanding. This could lead to a repossession order being granted and the person being evicted. A single person would then become homeless.
The disabled and seriously ill have been included in this new scheme, without any compassion for their predicament. A couple may sleep in separate rooms, due to one of them being ill, but would still be classed as having an extra bedroom.! Should a disabled person need 24 hour care,a helper may use a separate bedroom during overnight stays. That bedroom would also be extra. This whole scheme must be looked at again with a view to allowing certain over riding rules to cover for various permutations.
In Russia, decades ago, people applied for homes suitable to their needs and were allocated one, eventually. They had no choices. As a flat became available, they were, immediately allocated to the net on the list. This bedroom tax,as it is being called, is a move to bring in the Russian system of allocation according to needs as opposed to choice.
