Originally set up to run from Paris, France to Dakar, Senegal. It became extremely dangerous, when locals began using contestants as moving targets, for their own shooting sport. Then bandits began to 'tax' stretches of road and/or offer to ruin some team's chances, by shooting contestants/support crews or just stealing spares.
The event was making too much money, so it was moved to South America to be run there.
