Almost time for the famous Dakar Rally. The madness commences on 1st Jan 2011 and ends on the 16th. Trucks, jeeps, cars and bikers, with their big and small back up teams, head out into the wilderness of Argentina and Chile. Originally run between Paris and Dakar in Africa it has become way too dangerous in Africa. Bandits looked forward to it every year, stole gear and hi jacked teams for ransom as an added interest to the Rally!! If they could not steal or capture they just took shots at the competitors !! So it had to be either moved or cancelled. Being too good a money spinner and a showcase for vehicle and parts reliability it has moved to South America.
Forget Gumball USA and Gumball Europe which are for rich amateurs with exotic wheels. The Dakar has weird and wonderful custom built wheels to deal with high speed runs in the dessert and over very rough roads indeed!!
