I can remember a story, some decades ago, that a project was being put together to tow a broken off chunk of ice from the artic down passed Ireland, around Africa, through the straits of Hormuz and parked at Saudi Arabia.The plan being to water the desert. It didn't take place but was being considered.

To me, desalination plants, to get the salt  out of seawater, are the obvious way ahead
