I am suddenly reminded of the Doors singing ' this is the end....' at the beginning of Apocalypse Now.

Modern countries must operate a mixed economy or fail, as America is doing right now. There is a basic rule of thumb in Economics,  'Guns or Butter.' You can't do both. Socialism is a dirty word in America, simply because the 'make guns' folks are making huge amounts of money from making them.

As was discovered during WW2, converting factories and tooling for machines, to change from domestic to armaments production was not easy, costing a lot of time and capital. Following the demolition job of Europe, by all sides, planners had a blank canvas to begin recovery. They did so and built a mainly mixed economy. Some countries moved from centre to right, some to the left, others dithered between the two and got nowhere, wasting huge amounts undoing the laws of previous Governments, burning money by standing still. A country should never move too far away from the midpoint of an imaginary economic line, be it to left or right, to go forward.

By looking at history, we can see what happened to previous empires. The Grecian (left), Huns, Celts, (right), Ottoman (right) British (right) Russian (left). China (left but now seeing the light a bit) They all failed, just as Ameria will do, unless they accept some Socialism into their economic mix.

Britain is the nearest thing to a mixed economy. with free health care, support for those who need it. affordable housing, much of it rent-free for poorer families. Useless eaters, freeloaders, they cry. Yes, some abuse the system and even more sit outside Britain, enviously, looking in. It must be an attractive prospect for foreigners to read that, in Britain, they will get a home and received money, not to work! Nirvana, Utopia! However, they do not realise that this system evolved and has been paid for by the toil of generations. Is it any wonder that people want to protect what they have and not give it all away??
