Well Russia satellites can easily be tasked to do a square kilometer grid search which makes 8 sqKm a pretty easy job. Then the pictures or live feed directs people on the ground to box 1 or box 8 and then sub divides each box. What's so hard about a grid search in a level sand pit for a superpower??

By running back video footage they will be able to say  if it was a missile by the flash or as I believe discount it in favour of a barometric bomb. Pieces of wreckage will show ending outwards if it was a bomb and inwards if it was a missile. So the what is pretty easy. The why is obviously Russian escalation in Syria. The where  was a good choice which was not guarded too well.  A real soft target.

But the who is much more intriguing ?

Was it a cell of ISIS?  Was it Israel blaming ISIS and Egypt. Was it America over jealously of Russian forces gains where they have failed?  Was it personal,oligarch to oligarch, taking advantage of geo politics??  Where is the passenger list?
