I cannot see ISIS having a surface to air missile system which could bring down plane from 30K feet or above.They could certainly track the plane from takeoff but they could not know exactly where it would be. The plane may have been diverted,from a possible route, for a number of reasons.

Obviously, Russia becoming heavily involved in Syria makes them a serious target for revenge attacks. I believe that this was one and that it was caused by a barometric bomb being placed on the plane to blow it up at a certain height,as opposed to a timer mechanism bomb. A late departure, as happened with the Lockerbie aircraft,could injure terrorists in the airport.
