When the Earth was fired out of the one original huge mass,It was much hotter than it is today. As the planet has passed through extremely cold space,it has given off heat and contracted. However,the centre core is still very,very,hot and heat passes from the centre to the outer skin.

As The Earth cools,the outer skin tightens,but the heat causes it to crack. The outer skin is not completely joined together as one skin. Instead, there are a number of pieces of skin which move upwards and downwards,especially at the edges. At these edges,where plates meet,quakes occur.
