- How Glasgow was prepared for a Cold War nuclear strike

BBC News - How Glasgow was prepared for a Cold War nuclear strike:

I really do not know why they bothered preparing and wasting money doing so!!  I live about 15 miles from Glasgow. In the event of a nuclear attack both Glasgow and the West of Scotland would have bn fried. No preparation would hav saved us. Here is why.......

At that time, the US Navy had nuclear submarines and auxiliary ships, at a base in Sandbank, near Dunoon. It is 102 miles, by road, from Glasgow, but as the crow flies or the blast winds blow, it is much less. Not only this base is in the area, but the British Navy also have a nuclear submarine base at Coulport, in Argyllshire, which is less that 40 miles from Glasgow.   Boom  Boom.

About 6 miles from me, in a village in North Ayrshire, there is a Royal Navy depot, in which submarine missiles, from Coulport, are fixed and serviced. Glasgow Airport is five miles from my home and would also be a target. In addition, there are shipyards along the banks of the River Clyde which runs through Glasgow.

Preparing to be safe,in this area, was just a joke. We would have fried.!!!
