As far as I know these smart meters pulse readings to a base station about every six seconds. The plot is to get rid of a workforce of meter readers and their expenses. The power companies will have complete details of your usage and can calculate your bill quickly.
These pulses are on the same frequency as mobile phones. I believe that the figure is about 16.5 and the brain works on 16.0. There is a plethora of research and papers showing that that this closeness can be dangerous.
Unfortunately, for them, is that by placing a strong magnet on the smart meter, it stops, making them rather useless!
