If your car sustains damage from going into a pot hole this is what you should do.  Return to it with a ruler, a camera and a daily newspaper.
Place/hold the ruler upright in the hole and lay the newspaper down beside it having written the location on the top of the paper. Then take a photo. Taking a measurement showing the length and breadth also helps. The newspaper proves the date and records the location in the picture. Paperwork with you claim may 'disappear' but you have the photo.
