Believe it or not Japan won a war against China in 1894/95 and they had a second one 1937/45 Japan looted China of Gold which had been paid to China for silks, curry powder, jasmine and loads of other stuff.
However China got a lot of it out to Taiwan and other islands. This Gold was loaned to America in 1934 to prop them up after the Stock Market crash of 1929.
During WW2 Japan moved from island to island in the Pacific hunting for hoards of Gold. What use was there in capturing a small island? As American won them back and eventually the War in the Pacific, they, too, were searching for Gold hoards.Soldiers died over Gold.
