As Winson Churchill once said, ' jaw jaw is better than war war.' A man of few words as he was normally drunk and/or stoned out his mind.
While fighting in South Africa during the Boer War, he wrote home saying that he was suffering terrible toothache. His sister sent him out a quantity of the new " in thing " sweeping London, at the time, which was a tremendous pain killer, heroin ! He was hooked thereafter.
Vester Tilley sang a song about Champagne Charlie which most thought was about a good time guy drinking it. Nothing of the kind. They were sprinkling Cocaine on the top of the liquid. At that time most of high society were stoned out their heads as drugs were not illegal. Time moves on and they are all still stoned today !!
