Firefighters vote in favour of strikes in a row over pensions which could lead to first walkouts in a decade |
They only work for six months of the year but are paid for twelve plus shift allowances. Most stations have a gym and all have a kitchen. many have beds.
It has been found that some firemen who work in London, where the get a higher wage to cover living allowances, actually live in France! Thus they avoid paying any income tax!!! They return to do their shift and stay overnight with relatives! Many have second jobs, to increase their income still further. Mini cab driving is a favourite, as is the building trade, for cash, of course.!
I can remember when firefighters went on strike in the 1970's The army brought in geriatric fire engines labeled as the Green Goddesses. The troops moved into disused empty factories and worked a three shift system. They needed a police escort as this was before Satnav. They were not in luxury. They tried to sleep in the same factory units, on camp beds. Of course, they had a bar and drink was plentiful, at non taxed prices.
