Britain gave the world the Industrial Revolution in which machines replaced humans and lights allowed three shifts of work. This activity increased the numbers of the middle class, who are the managers of labour for the upper class owners.

As machines became more and more efficient, less people were required. But these people became very important and they charged for their labour accordingly. The only labour outlets were in heavy engineering shipbuilding and coal mining. As fewer and fewer people had the skills needed, this group too began to charge more for their labour..

So countries bought from the producers until they learned to do it themselves They did NOT have the various Laws of protection of wage rates which the producing countries had passed.

In economics there is a Law called Economies of Scale. If a process is labour intensive, then that is normally your highest cost. If your process is machine lead then the cost of buying the machines is huge at start up level. There comes a situation where labour is cheaper than buying machines. This has happened in Asia and India among many other countries.

Britain should give up completely, producing anything and become a service industry country like Switzerland, Luxembourg, Andora, Leichenstien and others have done. It is my hop that when Scotland finally becomes independent that the first Scottish Government declares Scotland to be a zero tax haven !  Watch the money flood in then, which can be used for the benefit of the Scottish people.
