I have never joined a Union as I was self employed for most of my working life. However,I am not anti union. Personally I prefer the little known Workers Collectives in which more than 7 employees can elect a person to deal with issues on their behalf inside the business that they all work in.If there is a problem,then sort it out,locally.
The first Strike in the Uk was carried out by the 'Matchstick Girls' in London. They dipped bits of wood into Sulphur and other stuff to make matches. Did they want better conditions? Nope....just more money! !!
This has been Union's shout since then give us more money or we will close your business down!! I cannot remember a strike being called for any reason other than more money !!!
