Modern planes are capable of taking off, flying a route and landing, without a pilot touching the controls.

However, a pilot is needed for those odd moments when either things go wrong or bad weather forces a route change which has to be entered into on board computers. Otherwise they can go to sleep and often do  or they can keep up their membership in the mile high club  !
