BBC News - Barra plane 'struck by lightning' during high winds
The runway on the Island of Barra is made of hard compacted sand. Planes may only land and take-off when the tide is out !!! A lightening strike would make little difference, as the plane was not earthed, at the time. Sometimes the strike dances round the plane, in a blue light, which is called St Elmo's fire.
