Were all my groupies in the 1970s over 16? God, I hope so, says Paul Daniels: Magician admits he can't remember all his past lovers |
In the 1970's,while I was at college, I was a roadie for completely unknown bands. It was fun! In between bands, I got involved with a disco. One night we had a gig at a seaside Town Hall, in Winter.! The Band, Slick, fronted by Midge Ure, were the stars and if memory serves were in the top ten at the time.
The hall was full and all was going well until Midge decided to bend over and sing to girls at the front. Now this was in the days of long cables and not radio microphones so they pulled is wire, as it were. Yours truly bolted on and retrieved him from a six foot drop!
So, at the end of the night, I had our gear at the rear door ready to load in the van. Foolishly, I opened the back door and one girl dived between my legs as another to tied to go round me. We got two of them out but one made it,screaming, to the band room where they wee eating fish suppers ! We got her out, too. These girls were 12/14. I left it for an hour and tried again. This time I edged the door open and a hard core were still there on a wet, windy night! I received every sexual offer that I had ever heard of and some that I had not, if I let them in to get at the band!! These girls were young!!
This was a real eye opener to me and I realised that pop stars really can have a hard life. In bands that I was with, we expected to rough it, in the van, with a case of beer. These guys were in the top ten, on Top of the Pops and here they were harassed, virtual prisoners, after midnight, in a town hall, on the West Coast of Scotland, eating fish and chips from newspaper wrappers. It can be hard on the road !!
