Up until about 30 years ago, it was illegal to carry a dead body in a hackney cab, in Scotland. When motorised cabs took over from the horse drawn ones, it was written into the taxi laws, that a gentleman must be able to enter/leave and sit upright in one, wearing an opera hat.
