Exploring Scotland in a motorhome

Exploring Scotland in a motorhome - Telegraph

I once hired a motorhome for a week, many years ago, to get away from it all over the New Year holiday. it was terrific! We had booked a four bed for the two of us to give us some room. When I arrived to collect it the firm gave me a six bed which was even bigger.
It had propane gas water and central heating, full bathroom/shower room, gas cooker, fridge, small freezer, sink, plenty cupboards and a 2.5 litre engine. The drawbacks were having to empty the bog drawer and filling up the water tank with a hose. There was a curtain divider to provide a master section double bed. Two couches could be used as single beds and there was a double bed above the driver cabin. Double glazing on all of the windows, too.
They really are much better than towing a caravan as there is one unit as opposed to two. Bike racks and roof racks can be fitted and many people tow a small boat trailer behind one. As they are just a big box, one has to be careful travelling on an open road while windy, but it toddled along at 50 mph.
Sure they are smaller versions of those magnificent American ones, but just great for touring as you can upsticks and move on as you please. after my experience in this one, I wanted to have one but never could afford it. Nowadays, to hirer one costs way too much, as firms realised the savings on hotel bills and charged accordingly.
