The dark side of prescription drugs

Leading article: The dark side of prescription drugs - Leading Articles, Opinion - The Independent

Prescription Drugs can turn you into an addict very easily. I am a case in point. I am clinically addicted to and opiate based painkiller, viz. dihydracodiene. I have been taking them for 25 years whether I am in pain or not.!!
I now take three 30mg tablets every three or four hours. If I do not then I go into withdrawal. I have come off them several times and it is not very pleasant, at all. it takes about SEVEN days to get off them. This is what happens...............
Firstly, my skin begins to tingle and I begin to scratch, a little. Then I feel as if I have developed a twitch, under the skin. This is followed by a freezing cold sweaty feeling. My stomach begins to knot up and if I am lying down, I have to continually sit up, go back down and just cannot get comfortable. Even if I take them, at this point, it takes a while for the tablets to dissolve and run round my system to reach the liver where they become Morphine, which, of course, comes from Poppies.
However, if I have run out or am trying to get off them, the knots in my stomach get tighter and happen more often. When lying down, as the knots tighten, so the up and down movements join in!! So I go up with the knot, take it and go back down, almost rhythmically. The sweats have intensified and I feel extremely flashed and warm, then cold, then warm.
About this time, I just have to get up and move about. This is followed by desperate searching through drawers, old medicine bottles and pockets of clothes. I have tried getting drunk in order to crash out, but that don't work!!!! So it is up and down the hallway, with knotted stomach and hot and cold sweats. Very unpleasant, indeed. But this is only the start up, opening act.
Then comes the nausea which is followed by very loose bowls indeed and the increasing feeling of wanting to vomit. I have sat on a toilet seat, dropping bouncing bombs and liquid sewage while vomiting into a basin at my feet!!! This goes on until there is nothing left but bile and the lining of your stomach to come up!!! Oh and it sure does, often, complete with flecks of blood. At this point, I try to eat anything, which comes back up soon after. All of this can go on for three or four days. Immodium, family size packet, helps the trots and gradually the vomiting eases as the poison is ejected.
I have gone through the above several times. After four days I can begin to take soup and toast. I find that ice cream settles the stomach, very well. I would still have the odd fierce knot or two but I am over the hill as it were. I just kept warm and let it take the course.
So success, I get off the damn things!!! I get up and survey the damage. Tissues everywhere. Toilet looking like a bomb hit it and half filled tins of soup and baked beans. By cleaning up, I then overdo it and end up having extreme joint pain. Sod it must get rid of this pain. Ding and I am hooked again !!!!!!
I don't come off them any more and I never, ever, run out !!!!! I have then planked all round the house and have even lied, by saying I dropped the bottle and the pills got dirty, to get many more to hide, just in case.
They say that more than about 12/15 will kill you. Well I'm still here!!! I sleep about six hours per day so that leaves 6 three hour periods at three per dose. So that is, at least 18 per day!! Every day. It has been known for me to wake up, because three/four hours has passed. I take the tablets and pop off again.
Oh and the joint pain? They don't do much for that now, either!!!
