A one time people people were armed with swords and knives as they went about their daily lives. Members of Parliament were no exception. The House of Commons was built in such a way that the benches for each Party were positioned a full extended arm and a half's length away from each other, so that one or more members could not stab a member opposite with a sword. When flintlock pistols started to be in vogue they were banned.
