Actually I believe they are there to protect the base from the hordes of Muslim protesters, who are travelling there to protest. There are only about 1,500 personnel on the base which is not enough to protect it. The families wee flown out about 10 days ago.The Turkish police stood down as it was considered that their force was not large enough, hence the troops being called in.
