Everything seems to be coming round to my initial view. They were actually after Putin's official plane! His official plane has 4 engines whereas the Malaysian one had 2. Otherwise the were similar in size,shape and most importantly colour scheme.
They did not expect a civilian plane as there was a no fly order but Putin's plane is designated as military and in any case the no fly applied to passenger planes. Putin was flying about 20/30 minutes behind MH17
The fighter was noted as climbing quickly and therefore the pilot may have been nervous or hurried and missed the engine count. He was expecting the plane and had ideas of the colour scheme so bang.!
The Sun may have played a part.
