This activity artificially keeps prices high  and any future sales,of the stock, will produce higher unit profits as the cost of making the cars, prior to stockpiling, would have been less. This works as long as these paddocks are not rented. The increasing value of the land,over time, covers the storage costs and they don't fall foul of any laws which say that land must be used, within a certain time frame.
