Even at $5.00 per gallon, Americans are lucky!  In the UK a gallon is $10 plus. If they will insist in driving V8 tanks to go do the shopping instead of smaller cars with better miles per gallon, to me, they deserve it!
My last car was a 1.8 litre Ford Focus.  It had plenty room for four folk and space for luggage. I often cruised at 80 mph and had it doing 130/140 mph on a few late night motorway burns!  It was good for 30/35 miles per gallon, if I drove properly.
America just gotta stop living on past memories and shape up to the present circumstances and not demand that the circumstances be changed to suit them.
